Investing in a sustainable future

With several companies in the Group whose operations are based on circular economy solutions, the Stena Metall Group has a clear contribution to sustainable development.

The Group's ambitious investments in innovation and development of circularity and recycling technologies has generated interest from the financial sector, and Stena Metall has raised capital through green instruments on several occasions. This includes a green term loan and a green revolving credit facility, both aimed at financing the Group's recycling operations. The Group has also issued three green bonds, to finance investments with a circular contribution.

Green bonds for investments in projects with a clear sustainability profile

The Stena Metall Group has issued in total three green bonds, of which two are currently active. All bonds have been specifically directed to investments in projects with a clear sustainability profile in accordance with the Group’s green bond framework.

The most recent green bond was issued in May 2023 with a nominal amount of 1 billion SEK. This was a re-financing of the first green bond that was issued in 2018, which financed investments in Stena Recycling’s flagship facility Stena Nordic Recycling Center in Halmstad, Sweden. The 2018 bond was widely considered to be the world’s first circularity themed green bond.

In April 2022, the Stena Metall Group issued its second green bond with a nominal amount of 1 billion SEK. It is aimed at a more diverse range of circular project throughout selected companies within the Group.

All bonds issued by the Stena Metall Group are connected to the Group’s green bond framework, which is rated dark green by the second opinion provider Cicero.

Listed as best-practice in the waste and circular service category

In its 2022 report regarding the global green bond market, analysis institute Cicero listed Stena Metall Group's green bond 2022 – 2027 among its best practice examples. Stena Metall Group is acknowledged for its solutions related to efficient resource management and circularity.

Our green financing framework focuses on projects aimed at further developing our circular processes. The framework has been reviewed by the independent analysis institute Cicero, which gives it the highest rating of ‘dark green’. This rating is given to projects and solutions that correspond to the long-term vision of a low carbon and climate resilient future.”
