“My interest in circular economy led me to Stena Metall’s trainee program”
Anni Warnicki had recently completed her university studies in circular economy and was looking for an opportunity to put theory into practice. Through Stena Metall's trainee program, she got the opportunity to learn more about the recycling industry and to work hands-on with the actual business. Today, she leads several key projects as well as strategy updates.
“The trainee program was so much more comprehensive than I had pictured. It provided a real deep dive into the recycling value chain, from inbound materials to processing and outbound materials. It was also a unique journey with a great team of fellow trainees. We developed a lot by discussing and reflecting on what we had seen and learned. It was a special year in my career overall, says Anni Warnicki.
Hands-on experience is at the center of the program.
“We had the opportunity to work at the branches and got to know the people working there and learned practical things. This was coupled with overall insights. We learned what value we create for our customers and where we are heading as a company. These varying perspectives were very beneficial and helped me in the positions I received after my trainee year.”

Shortly after completing her trainee period, Anni was offered the position of manager for a metal shredder plant. Now she could test her understanding of the value chain and of the overall business. This is also when her leadership skills were put to the test. Anni was responsible for a site with nearly twenty employees.
“It was a big step up. But I received great support from my manager and from colleagues in other countries running similar plants, so I had the courage to take on that responsibility. I was responsible not only for production and planning, but also for ensuring clear communication between the plant and the branches. It was all about making sure everyone understood the guidelines and policies, and that we were working towards the same goals.”
Today, Anni is part of Stena Recycling’s strategy and transformation team, working closely with senior management to develop business strategies, tracking progress, and reporting to the Stena Recycling Group. The job also involves preparing for the implementation of a new business platform.
“It’s inspiring to work with strategies and the long-term goals, since business strategy within circular economy has been part of my studies. I also enjoy working with so many nice and experienced people. I get to learn from these experts and work together to solve challenges.”

“This industry is in constant motion. New technologies, regulations, and customer expectations reshape it all the time. I have learned that the recycling business is anything but static.
