“Workplace safety is everyone’s job”
Every year, Stena Recycling collects and recycles more than six million tonnes of waste and end-of-life products at over 200 locations across Europe. At the recycling facilities, the work often includes handling hazardous waste and operating heavy machinery and vehicles. The safety issues are therefore high on the agenda and involve everyone.
At the two branches in Pori in Finland, electronic waste and scrap metal from all over Finland are collected, processed and turned into new raw materials. They have not had a single workplace accident in over eight years.
“Workplace safety is an important part of every day. I think it’s about creating a culture and making everyone take responsibility for your own and your team’s safety and its development. It’s not something to be taken for granted, or just one- or two-persons’ job. It’s everyone’s job,” says Pilvi Salovaara, Branch manager at Pori Kartano.

Safety issues a part of every day
At the Pori Kartano branch, the electronic waste is classified and sorted. Some of the waste is transported to the Pori Tahkoluoto branch for further processing. A huge shredder is turning the scrap into smaller pieces.
“We work with safety every day. Each day starts with a meeting in the team. Safety has to be earned every day through action,” says Jari Takala, Production manager at Pori Tahkoluoto.
In the shredder, discarded metal products are fed in to be separated into smaller pieces.
“I strive towards taking safety into consideration in my own work by being proactive, clear and by finding ways to operate that reduce unnecessary hassle, so to speak, to repair equipment if it is not working properly and fix things that are out of order,” adds Henna-Riikka Lehtopolku who is a scale operator and team-lead at Pori Tahkoluoto.
“Our teamwork works really well. I think we have an amazing team here. Everyone is heard and the workplace dynamics is fantastic,” concludes Henna-Riikka Lehtopolku.
