HaloSep is awarded linked to the Global Goals

HaloSep is a process that solves an environmental problem that arises in any plant that incinerates waste to generate electricity and heat. The incineration process creates fly ash containing heavy metals and salts. The ash is therefore classified as hazardous waste and must be disposed of in dedicated landfills. This often involves long-distance transport, which in its turn contributes to undesired carbon dioxide emissions. Worldwide, millions of tons of fly ash are generated each year, creating cost and is slowly but surely filling up landfills.

Thanks to HaloSep, the fly ash can now be treated in an automated process. Metals and salt are separated out, leaving a purified ash that is classified as non-hazardous waste. The process has been developed by Stena Metall and verified in a full scale in a project jointly run by the recycling company Stena Recycling and Vestforbrænding. The demonstration plant has been built with support from EU Life and is in operation at Vestforbrænding in Copenhagen.

“The plant is now in its final test period, which ends in April. We see that the processes are working fully in accordance with expectations. We also see significant environmental and climate benefits, such as local management of fly ash, reduced transport and CO2 emissions. In addition, we see economic benefits and opportunities. This is what I call a win-win solution, says Steen Neuchs Vedel,” CEO of Vestforbrænding.

HaloSep is now ready for the world.

“We have started to work with several potential customers both in Sweden and in other countries, and we see a lot of interest in our solution. A major advantage for HaloSep is that it is scalable to fit different sizes of incineration plants, and can thus be built locally or for smaller regional clusters. The potential is great and we are now looking forward to start delivering HaloSep plants and contribute to making waste-to-energy plants more sustainable,” says Staffan Svensson.
