“As branch manager, I am responsible for an incredibly exciting business”
Casper Dahlström had no idea how complex the recycling industry is. He studied industrial economics, and after writing his university thesis for Stena Recycling, he became curious about the recycling industry and applied for the trainee program. Today, three years later, he is a branch manager responsible for an operation that processes over 100,000 tons of material per year.
“After completing my studies, I was unsure whether to continue studying or look for a job. But the trainee program offered both: learning on the job. During my traineeship, I had the opportunity to explore different parts of the organization and gained a broad understanding of an exciting and complex industry. I also participated in leadership courses and presentation training, which has contributed to my ability to take responsibility and develop as a leader,” says Casper.
After his trainee period, Casper was first given a role as business developer with responsibility for supporting Stena Recycling's regions in Sweden, which together are responsible for a nationwide network of nearly 90 recycling branches.
“I assisted the branches with improvement projects. It was a very educational experience. It is at the branches, out in the field as we say, where production takes place and where we earn our money. There, I became aware of the pride and commitment that exists out there. It is a result of the local business acumen we have here at Stena. At the branch, you have ownership, responsibility for your business, and everyone should feel that they can influence things.”

From trainee to manager
After moving to Stockholm, Casper had the opportunity to work as a production manager at a branch.
"It was something that really appealed to me. I felt that there was a gap there based on the experience I had gained during my trainee period and from my role as a business developer. I really wanted to understand our business from the ground up. As production manager, I would ensure safe and efficient production and provide employees with the right conditions to do their jobs in the best possible way.”
After less than a year, Casper was ready to take on the role of manager of the Rosersberg branch.
"I wanted to work in a more comprehensive and strategic role. I wanted to own the business and work with the results, so the role of branch manager suited me better as a person. My time as production manager was a really useful learning experience, helping me to truly understand the operational side of things, which is a big part of our business.”
The Rosersberg branch processes over 100,000 tons of material every year, mainly plastic, paper, and combustible wood. Customers include businesses and the public sector, as well as other recycling companies and housing associations.
"It's a large operation, and my responsibilities include everything from production and personnel to environmental permits and other regulations. The best thing about the job is that I can influence the business. But it's a team effort. We work closely together here. Everyone's work is important. Everyone should feel proud when we achieve good results.”
Casper concludes with some advice for future trainees:
“Be curious and ask questions! Visit different parts of the organization and talk to those who work at the branches to understand the core business. This will be useful to you in whatever role you end up in later.”
