Our history

From dealing scrap in Göteborg to recycling, manufacturing and large-scale trading on the world market. This is our history.

From local entrepreneur to global operator

The 23-year-old Sten Allan Olsson started the Sten A. Olsson Metallprodukter trading company in November 1939. From a small, unassuming office, he traded ferrous and non-ferrous scrap, rags and raw rubber. Where others saw old junk, he saw new business opportunities.

The business grew steadily and Sten began to collect and sell more types of material. In 1946, he bought his first ship as cargo became an increasingly important part of the business. Nine years later, the doors opened on the first Göteborg branch, built to increase the amount of scrap that could be collected and begin processing material.

In 1972, the business was split into two companies. One became Stena Line, which focused on maritime transport. The other was the Stena Metall. Over the following decades the Stena Metall Group grew strongly, acquiring several other companies along the way. In 2007, four recycling companies were merged into one to become Stena Recycling.

Today, the Stena Metall Group consists of seven business areas, all aimed at working closely with customers. They offer expertise and cost effective solutions to meet each individual customer's needs.

Although we have grown from a small-scale, local company to a major international business, much is the same as it was in 1939. We are still owned by the Olsson family and still have our head office in Göteborg. The spirit of Sten Allan Olsson still permeates our work, which is to create economic and environmentally sustainable solutions for the intelligent management of resources.
